Grandma’s Lobotomy

Grandma’s Lobotomy is a survival game created by me and a friend for a game jam.

The game is heavily inspired by Call of Duty’s zombies mode, with round based survival, wall buys, and weapon upgrades. The goal of the game is to survive as long as possible, with the player being attacked by memes and each hit causing the player’s screen to be filled with more and more videos as they take damage.

In order to clear your screen and regenerate health, you must survive until Grandma wakes up and lobotomizes you.

The game was created as a way for us to gain experience in working collaboratively within the Unity engine. Grandma’s Lobotomy went on to win first place in the 2024 Spring Weird Game Jam.

Development

Development of this game began in Spring of 2024, after me and my friend decided we wanted to work together to finish a project in Unity together.

We believed that joining a game jam would be the best way to motivate us to finish the project, and we were able to find the Weird Game Jam. Given this theme, we were able to create something less serious so we would not have to worry about polish and could simply put our skills to the test.

During this time, I was in the middle of a huge classic Call of Duty phase, playing through all of the older games and experimenting with systems of my own. We decided it would be a great game-loop to work with, but we wanted to add our own weird twist to it so that it would fit the theme of the game jam. We landed on the idea of replacing the zombies with memes, and replacing the health system as a whole with the system of Grandma coming out every few rounds to restore your health.

The final result is a game that we were both very content with, and our first completed game together.
